Discovering a treatment for preeclampsia (Fiona’s research)
January 25, 2023

Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy. It affects around 5% of all pregnant women and there is no medical treatment. Delivery is required to stop disease progression.
Fiona identified a medication called metformin might be the first medical treatment of preeclampsia. She showed metformin reduced key proteins that cause the disease in laboratory assay. The team took this medication to clinical trial and it prolonged pregnancy by 7 days.
The team are now embarking on a larger (phase 3) clinical trial. If this is successful, metformin will be used to treat preeclampsia in the clinic. It will be the first disease modifying medications.
