Cutting edge research at MOGS

Research

Fiona is an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. She has published over 70 papers and has attracted many national and international grants and awards for her research on developing novel treatments for pregnancy complications. She has amassed over $2M in grant funds and is grateful to NHMRC, Normal Beischer Medical Research Foundation, Cerebral Palsy Foundation among others.

Research Team

Fiona leads a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, engineers and scientists. She is the primary supervisor of PhD students and trainee obstetrician and gynaecologists. Her team is focused on developing novel treatments for pregnancy complications and inventing better ways to monitor the baby. They are at the cutting edge of obstetric research on a global scale.

Research focus

Fiona’s main research fields include:

1) Developing medications to treat pregnancy complications. She discovered metformin as potentially the first medication to treat preeclampsia.

2) Developing novel devices to better monitor the baby in pregnancy. She is now commercialising this device.

In the media

Fiona believes it is really important to let the community know about the advances being made in obstetrics through engaging the media. She is also a spokesperson for her college the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG). She loves being able to promote research and the health of mothers and babies.
